There is no right way when it comes to logo design. It’s a very individual and creative process. You can create a logo yourself or you can ask a professional designer to do it for you. Whatever you decide to do, make sure you create a logo that’s unique and memorable.
If you are going to create a blog you will probably not need a logo and a tagline, unless you plan to create a corporate blog. Personal blogs use often the blog title instead of a logo.
1. Get inspired and search for a font
The font should represent you or your business. This can be, for example, a handwritten font if you want to represent something natural, organic or playful. Or it can be a light sans serif font if you want to represent something light and fresh.
To find the right font you can use the same method you used to define the primary colour for your website.

2. Choose a clear and readable font
Use only one font family and play with its styles. Don’t mix two different fonts. Avoid also using crazy or ultra-thin fonts. Often it’s better to use common fonts such as Arial, Times New Roman, and Helvetica.
3. Download the font and install it
Make sure the font you’re using is free of charge. If you buy a font licence be sure to buy the right licence to use the font for a logo on your website.
4. Install a vector graphics editor
If you don’t have a vector graphics editor go to www.inkscape.org, download and install the open source vector graphics editor to create an .eps file. The Inkscape editor will use the fonts you downloaded and installed on your computer.
5. Work in black and white
A logo should always look good in black and white. Add your primary colour at the end of the design process, if necessary. Avoid adding highlights, gradients or shadows and consider the background. Normally logos use a transparent background.
6. Add a shape, if useful
Now that you have defined the font, style and colour of your logo you could add a shape. I say shape because your logo needs to be very simple. Use only vector graphics and avoid using gradients or shadows.
It’s not always necessary to add a graphic. Have a look at the logos of IBM, Google, BBC and McDonalds. Does anyone of them use a graphic?
But sometimes a small shape as used in Amazon’s logo can make the difference between a good and a bad logo.
Adobe Photoshop offers great custom shapes. Download them in your custom shape folder. Then open Photoshop, select the custom shape tool, open the custom shape library and load the new shapes: akvis.com/en/photoshop-tips/shapes.php

7. Save your logo
Save it first as a scalable vector graphic file such as .eps and then as a graphic file with small file size for your website.
With the Inkscape editor you can use the .svg or .eps format to save the logo as a vector graphic file and the .png format to save it for the website.
