Create audio

1. Organize the equipment

If you don’t have a microphone you will need to buy or rent one. If you want to produce podcasts regularly the Behringer Podcast Studio USB could be a good choice for you. It includes a microphone, headphones, audio software and a useful sound mixer. But there are also a lot of other good microphones available.

2. Open an audio editor

You can use the online audio editor www.aviary.com/tools/audio-editor to record and edit your audio.

Alternatively you can use:

3. Define the format

Record in the WAV format to edit the sound on a Windows machine.
Record in the AIFF format to edit the sound on a Mac machine.
Don’t record directly to MP3. You will compress an already compressed file.

4. Record audio

Record your sound with the best quality available.
Speak clearly, slowly and avoid dialect.
Avoid background music and noise (hum of ventilation system) while you are speaking.

5. Cut and arrange

Arrange your recorded audio files into a linear sequence to tell a story. With the audio editor you can cut the file down to single clips, delete some parts that you don’t like and arrange them into different tracks.

6. Add sound

If you want to add sound use only podsafe music or music that is under a Creative Commons Licence. Be aware of copyright infringements when using music in your podcast.

Sources for music:

7. Mix it down

Use the MP3 format for audio files on the web.
Export the file as 33K 16-bit MP3 for high-quality voice.
Export the file as 44.1K 16-bit MP3 for CD quality sound.

8. Publish it

You can upload your audio file directly to your website.
Make sure your player offers sound controls.

On Weebly.com it’s not possible to upload an audio file without a Pro Account. Upload your audio file to a podcast hosting service such as www.podbean.com. You can embed the player later on your Weebly.com website with a Custom HTML element.

9. Offer a non-audio version

You should also offer a non-audio version of your content for people with a hearing impairment, or people sitting in an office where it’s not allowed to use a headset.

When to use audio

Audio is a very efficient way to deliver information. You can record voices and deliver podcasts on the web. Or you can offer sample music, if you are a musician. Be careful when using music on your website. Copyright in the music business is very complex. It’s up to you to verify the terms of use.

  • Use audio when you want users to focus on the sound.
  • Use audio to offer comments or notes for a presentation and make the information on the page more comprehensive.
  • Use audio to demonstrate a piece of music.
  • Use audio to make things more personal.
  • Use audio to teach the pronunciation of words (foreign language).

  • Don’t use background music unless you are a musician or work with sound.
  • Don’t automatically launch audio on your website.
