What’s is a hosted blogging service. It’s the little brother of the open source WordPress blogging software which can be downloaded and installed on a web server. is less flexible than the software but it’s easier to use. You can start a blog in seconds without any technical knowledge and you will never need to think about things like a hosting account, database, FTP etc. And is not just a blog. It allows you also to create web pages.

How it works

  1. Sign up for a blog
Choose a address (you can switch to your domain name later) and define a title for your blog. You can also add an image to represent your blog.
  2. Define the design by choosing one of over 190 free themes.
  3. Customize your template by changing the background and the header image.
If you want to change the fonts and the colours you will need to pay for it.
  4. Add widgets (features) to your sidebar
You can drag and drop new elements on your sidebar and place a Flickr photo stream, tag cloud, post archive, Facebook “like” button, Twitter tweets and so on.
  5. Insert pages
In addition to your Blog you can insert web pages such as “about me”
  6. Publish your site
  7. Write your first post

Who’s behind is powered by the open source WordPress software. It’s under active development and runs as a freemium model by Automattic. was created in 2005 to bring the WordPress experience to a larger audience. In September 2010 there were already 13.9 million blogs.

The WordPress software ( was released in 2003 by Matt Mullenweg. It’s the largest self-hosted blogging tool in the world and everything was created by and for the community.
