www.wordpress.com is a hosted blogging service. It’s the little brother of the open source WordPress blogging software which can be downloaded and installed on a web server. WordPress.com is less flexible than the software but it’s easier to use. How it works
- Sign up for a blog
Choose a WordPress.com address http://www.yourblog.wordpress.com (you can switch to your domain name later) and define a title for your blog. You can also add an image to represent your blog. - Define the design by choosing one of over 190 free themes.
- Customize your template by changing the background and the header image.
If you want to change the fonts and the colours you will need to pay for it. - Add widgets (features) to your sidebar
You can drag and drop new elements on your sidebar and place a Flickr photo stream, tag cloud, post archive, Facebook “like” button, Twitter tweets and so on. - Insert pages
In addition to your Blog you can insert web pages such as “about me” - Publish your site

www.wordpress.com is powered by the open source WordPress software. It’s under active development and runs as a freemium model by Automattic.
